International Women's Day 2020

International Women's Day 2020
Posted in: CMT Group Blog
#EachforEqual. We’ve just celebrated International Women’s Day– an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women across the world, and to call for gender parity. It’s an event that spans borders and industries, and it’s been celebrated since 1911. What does it mean for construction? Traditionally, we’re an industry that’s male-dominated. Areas such as culture, inflexible working hours and even subtle bias such as site clothing designed for men have all made the industry a less attractive option in the past. According to Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, 78% of construction workers are male; there’s clearly progress to be made. That said, the industry has come a long way. A recent report from Randstad, the HR consulting firm, shows that the number of women in the industry is on the rise. This is due to a wide range of factors, ranging from more inclusive recruiting practices to inspiring female role models becoming known in the industry. There’s countless evidence to suggest this is a good thing for construction, particularly with the shortage of workers we’re facing post-Brexit. Back to International Women’s Day. This was a great opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the many achievements of the talented women who work in the industry – from inspiring leaders such as Zaha Hadid to the everyday triumphs of all the women who work in it. We conducted a few interviews at CMT to show what this means for our staff. “At CMT we pride ourselves in being a team that thinks equally and builds smart relationships to make changes. We work together to find common ground” “The achievement I want to highlight is the 10-mile cycle ride 3 of our female team members did along the Thames for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. It was great to be able to support!” We’re working on a range of initiatives to break down the barriers and help women succeed, both in our company and across the industry. This ranges from simple measures to holding stock of ladies-fit PPE to actions like refurbishing our female washroom area to make it more suitable. We’re committed to #BalanceforBetter – a balanced world is a better world.
