According to the HSE and Cancer Research UK, outdoor workers such as construction workers who are exposed to the sun for prolonged periods are exposed to risks including skin damage and, eye damage, overheating, dehydration and most seriously, an increased chance of developing skin cancer - there are ways in which you can stay protected, here they are...

  1. 1) Keep your top on - clothing forms a protective barrier to sun rays, especially tightly woven clothing
  2. 2) Wear a hat or neck cape - the back of the ears and the neck are especially vulnerable areas, protect them with a hat with a brim or flap, or a neck cape
  3. 3) Stay in the shade - easier said than done but do your best to avoid the sun, particularly on breaks
  4. 4) Use sun cream - make sure you carry a bottle of sun cream on your or utilise sun safety stations if you have them on-site
  5. 5) Stay hydrated - ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration
  6. 6) Check your sink - check your skin regularly for unusual moles or spots that change colour, shape or size, seek medical attention if you find any
