Why construction?
Within construction, there are three main categories; craft roles, technical roles and professional and managerial roles. It’s important to remember construction covers a huge range of jobs and within each of these sectors are an extensive number of opportunities. As well as providing a vast number of opportunities, construction careers are amongst the most secure of jobs because construction will always be required for building roads, houses, bridges and other structures. More often than not, the salary you receive within a construction role will be based on experience with an average starting wage of £20,000-£21,000 per annum.
What do construction roles entail?
Given the huge variety of jobs available, there are a large number of skills that can be developed and obtained through working in this industry. The below gives just a few. Brick Masons- These workers are highly skilled in building, maintaining and repairing walls, chimneys, stone floors to name but a few.
- These construction workers are responsible for pouring concrete and adding finishing touches to walls, sidewalks and steps. Training is required in how to mix and use different types of cement.
- Although not as complicated as some areas of construction; demolition is amongst the most dangerous. Demolition workers have to be able to accurately calculate dynamite requirements and position it correctly for safety purposes.
- Engineering is one of the most highly skilled construction careers. Engineers are responsible for drawing plans, examining and planning building structures and subsequently overseeing the work.
- Glaziers are responsible for installing windows and other plate glass in buildings.
