A popular and useful tool, the
drill is essential to any tool kit. However, the type of
drill bit you require will depend on the job at hand. At CMT Group we stock a wide range to help whatever your requirements. We take a look at the main varieties to help you make the right decision.
What Type Of Material Are You Drilling?
Metal
Using the correct drill bit is essential to
drilling metal correctly. Often, the same drill bits for metal can also be used for wood. The most common material for metal drill bits is high-speed steel (HSS). At CMT Group, we supply
HSS Roll Forged Jobber Drill Bits; these come in sizes from 2mm through to 12mm.
Glass
Shaped like a small spear, drill bits for glass feature a steel shaft and carbide tip. To successfully drill through glass, use a low speed and disengage hammer impact mode (if applicable). We stock a
Spear Drill Bit, ideal for tile and stone as well as glass. This is available in both 6mm and 8mm.
Masonry
Designed to withstand force,
masonry drill bits are typically used with a hammer drill. These often feature a special shank shape such as the
SDS type drill bit (slotted drive system) that allows the bit to slide within the chuck when hammering.
Wood
Ideal for
drilling wood, an auger bit has a screw tip that starts the hole and pulls the bit through the workpiece to quickly create a clean hole. Designed with a high cutting capacity, most wood drill bits can be used on all types of hard and softwood. At CMT Group, we stock both
Hex Shank and
SDS Plus Shank in a range of sizes.
