Since sentencing guidelines were racketed up in February 2016, fines in the Construction division have reached £14m, making it the most costly Health and Safety sector. Manufacturing follows closely behind at £12m.
Four construction companies were fined over £1m in 2016. The largest fine happened when a Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions employee lost their life after a trench collapse. The firm were fined £2.6m. BLM, an insurance and risk law firm, tracked 87 offences committed by Construction Companies since January 2016. These accounted for almost a third of all health and safety fines issued.
