SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor

An SDS or SDS Plus drill spindle accepts only SDS-shank tooling. When the task requires standard round-shank bits, a drill chuck must be fitted between the spindle and the bit. The SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor makes this possible by converting the SDS or SDS Plus spindle to a ½" x 20 UNF thread, the standard mount for drill chucks. Once fitted, any drill chuck with a ½" x 20 UNF mount can be attached and used for rotary drilling with standard round-shank bits. This adaptor is the component that connects the CMT SDS Keyless Chuck and CMT SDS Keyed Chuck to an SDS or SDS Plus machine.

One limitation applies and must be understood before use: the drill must not be used in hammer mode when this adaptor is fitted. Hammer mode generates percussion forces that the adaptor and chuck connection are not designed to withstand. Rotary mode only.

Why Choose the SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor?

  • Converts SDS to ½" x 20 UNF: The standard thread specification for drill chucks, making this adaptor compatible with the full range of half-inch UNF mount chucks including the CMT SDS Keyless Chuck and CMT SDS Keyed Chuck.

  • SDS and SDS Plus compatible: Fits both SDS and SDS Plus machine spindles, covering the two most widely used SDS formats on UK construction sites.

  • Expands machine capability: Allows a single SDS or SDS Plus drill to be used for both SDS-shank and standard round-shank tooling, reducing the need to carry a second drill for different bit types.

  • Sold separately: Available as a standalone item for operatives who already own a compatible chuck, or as a spare for those who use multiple chucks across different machines.

Who Is This For?

This adaptor is for contractors, groundworkers, electricians, plumbers, and general site operatives who use an SDS or SDS Plus drill as their primary machine and need to run standard round-shank tooling on the same drill. It is an essential component for anyone fitting a ½" UNF mount drill chuck to an SDS machine, and is particularly relevant to operatives who already own a compatible chuck or who are purchasing the CMT SDS Keyless Chuck or CMT SDS Keyed Chuck separately.

Typical Applications

  • Connecting the CMT SDS Keyless Chuck to an SDS or SDS Plus drill

  • Connecting the CMT SDS Keyed Chuck to an SDS or SDS Plus drill

  • Any application requiring a ½" x 20 UNF chuck to be fitted to an SDS or SDS Plus machine

  • Rotary drilling with standard round-shank bits on an SDS platform

  • Expanding the capability of an existing SDS or SDS Plus drill without purchasing a second machine

How to Use

  1. Ensure the drill is switched off and the battery is removed or the machine is unplugged before fitting the adaptor.

  2. Insert the SDS shank end of the adaptor into the SDS or SDS Plus spindle of the drill and lock it in place following the standard SDS bit fitting procedure for your machine.

  3. Thread the drill chuck onto the ½" x 20 UNF end of the adaptor. Hand tighten until secure.

  4. If using a keyed chuck, tighten the chuck fully using the chuck key before operating the drill.

  5. Refit the battery or reconnect power.

  6. Select rotary mode only on the drill. Do not select hammer mode.

  7. Proceed with the drilling task using standard round-shank bits within the capacity of the fitted chuck.

  8. To remove the adaptor, switch off the drill, remove power, and follow the standard SDS bit removal procedure for your machine.

Safety

  • Always remove power from the drill before fitting or removing the adaptor.

  • This adaptor must not be used in hammer mode under any circumstances. Hammer mode generates percussion forces that the adaptor and chuck connection are not designed to withstand. Using this adaptor in hammer mode risks damage to the adaptor, the chuck, the drill, and serious injury to the operator.

  • Check that the adaptor is fully locked into the SDS spindle before fitting a chuck or operating the drill.

  • Inspect the ½" x 20 UNF thread on the adaptor before each use. Do not use a damaged or cross-threaded adaptor.

  • Wear appropriate eye protection during all drilling operations.

Maintenance

  • Remove accumulated swarf and dust from the SDS shank and thread after each use.

  • Inspect the SDS shank for wear or damage regularly. A worn shank may not lock securely into the spindle.

  • Inspect the ½" x 20 UNF thread for damage after each use. A damaged thread must not be used.

  • Store in a dry location to prevent corrosion on the shank and thread.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor do?

A: The SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor converts an SDS or SDS Plus drill spindle to a ½" x 20 UNF thread. This allows a standard drill chuck with a ½" x 20 UNF mount to be fitted to the drill, enabling the use of standard round-shank bits on an SDS or SDS Plus machine.

Q: Which drill chucks is the SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor compatible with?

A: The SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor is compatible with any drill chuck that has a ½" x 20 UNF mount. This includes the CMT SDS Keyless Chuck (CHUCK) and the CMT SDS Keyed Chuck (CHUCK12), both available from cmt.co.uk.

Q: Can I use the drill in hammer mode with the SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor fitted?

A: No. The drill must not be used in hammer mode when this adaptor is fitted. Hammer mode generates percussion forces that the adaptor and chuck connection are not designed to withstand. This adaptor is for rotary drilling only. If hammer drilling is required, remove the adaptor and chuck and fit an SDS-shank bit directly to the drill spindle.

Q: Does the SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor fit SDS Plus machines as well as standard SDS machines?

A: Yes. The SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor fits both SDS and SDS Plus machine spindles, covering the two most widely used SDS formats on UK construction sites.

Q: Does this adaptor come with a chuck?

A: No. The SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor is sold separately and does not include a chuck. The CMT SDS Keyless Chuck (CHUCK) and CMT SDS Keyed Chuck (CHUCK12) are both available separately from cmt.co.uk and are compatible with this adaptor. Note that the CMT SDS Keyed Chuck (CHUCK12) is supplied with this adaptor included in the box.

Q: Why buy the SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor from CMT Group?

A: CMT Group has supplied construction and trade professionals across the UK since 2010. The SDS Plus Chuck Adaptor is held in stock for next working day delivery on orders placed online by 7pm. Trade account holders benefit from agreed contract pricing, full order visibility, and live delivery tracking through our EDGE procurement portal. Order online at cmt.co.uk.
