Powder extinguishers, also known as dry chemical extinguishers, are used to put out fires involving combustible materials, such as wood, paper, and cloth, as well as flammable liquids and gases.

The dry chemical powder works by smothering the fire, cutting off its oxygen supply, and disrupting the chemical chain reaction that is causing the fire to burn. 

They are also effective on electrical equipment fires. They are not recommended for use on cooking oil or grease fires, however.
