PAK Detector Spray 500ml – Rapid Coal Tar & PAH Indicator

Overview

The PAK Detector Spray is a specialist aerosol indicator designed to help identify the potential presence of coal tar and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bituminous materials such as asphalt. It is used on roads, earthworks, pipes, and construction environments where rapid on-site screening is needed. Once applied as a thin white layer and left to dry for approximately 15 minutes, the formula reacts by dissolving potential PAH compounds and changes colour to brown/yellow to indicate a positive result at tar PAH levels above 100ppm. This product provides a practical indication only and is not an official laboratory measurement. For site-wide deployment, it is available in single cans or boxes of 12.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Rapid coal tar and PAH indicator spray for bituminous material screening.
  • Clear visual proof: white spray changes to brown/yellow when PAHs above 100ppm are indicated.
  • High sensitivity indication for PAH presence above 100 ppm.
  • Fast-drying performance with a typical drying time of 15 minutes.
  • Operates in UK weather conditions from -10°C to +50°C.
  • Suitable for application on concrete, bitumen, and gravel surfaces.
  • Supports pollutant hazard awareness during road and surfacing works.
  • Available in 500ml cans, commonly purchased in cartons of 12 for site teams.

Installation & Applications

Use head down and spray a thin, even layer onto the surface being assessed. Allow to dry for approximately 15 minutes. If PAHs are present above the indication threshold, the coating will change from white to brown/yellow. Where visibility is uncertain, a UV light can help highlight colour change. After use, purge the can head up. Typical applications include highways, road surfacing, earthworks, utilities trenching, and construction sites where rapid indication of coal tar and PAH risk is required.

Who Is This For?

  • Highways and road surfacing teams screening asphalt and bituminous materials.
  • Groundworks and utilities crews working around legacy tarmac and tar-bound surfaces.
  • Environmental and compliance teams supporting on-site hazard identification.
  • Procurement teams supplying rapid screening consumables for multiple site operatives.

Competitive Advantages

Designed for practical site use, this indicator spray provides a clear, fast, colour-change response without specialist equipment. Its ability to operate from -10°C to +50°C supports year-round UK projects, while carton-of-12 purchasing helps contractors equip multiple teams for consistent screening across active works.

Why CMT Group?

CMT Group supplies specialist site consumables and safety-led products for highways and construction teams, with clear specifications to support confident procurement.
  • Trade-focused product guidance for compliance-led site decisions.
  • Practical consumables for roadworks, utilities, and construction environments.
  • Bulk purchasing options for multi-site and multi-team deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the PAK Detector Spray detect? It provides an indication of potential coal tar and PAH presence in bituminous materials by detecting PAH compounds above 100ppm.

How do I know if the result is positive? After spraying a thin white layer and allowing it to dry for approximately 15 minutes, the coating changes to brown/yellow when PAHs above 100ppm are indicated.

Is this an official measurement of PAH content? No. It is not a laboratory measurement. It provides a rapid indication only and should be used as part of a wider site assessment process.

Can it be used in cold UK weather? Yes. It can be used between -10°C and +50°C, supporting year-round road and construction projects.

Is it available in cartons for multiple operatives? Yes. It is available in single cans or boxes of 12 for site-wide deployment and multi-team screening.
