No Falls Week
No Falls Week is an annual awareness campaign launched in 2024 by the No Falls Foundation - the UK's first and only charity devoted exclusively to the work at height sector.
The foundations mission is built around three core pillars:
- EDUCATION
Delivering an ongoing programme that raises awareness of the risks associated with working at height. This includes promoting the importance of proper risk assessment, informed equipment selection and professional training. - RESEARCH
Driving research and sharing knowledge across the construction industry. The foundation works in collaboration with a wide range of organisations, all with a shared goal: To improve safety and prevent falls from height. - SUPPORT
Providing guidance, support and relief to individuals and families affected by falls from height or injuries caused by falling objects.
The Cost Of Human Falls
As we mark No Falls Week, its important to reflect on the ongoing risks faced by those working at height, and the very real consquences when safety measures fall short.
According to the latest data relased by the the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), falls from height were the leading cause of fatal workplace accidents in 2023/24. Out of 87 work-related fatalities recorded in the UK, 50 were caused by falls from height - thats almost one person every week.
These numbers arent just statistics - they represent workers whos lives where cut short, families affected, and colleagues left behind. They serve as a reminder that, despite improvements on workplace safety regulations, more must be done to protect those operating in high-risk environments like construction and maintenance.
Furthermore, not all falls from height result in fatalities, but many lead to life-altering consequences. These incidents often impact not just an individuals physical helath, but also their mental wellbeing, financial stability, and ability to return to work.
In 2023-2024 alone, up to 37,000 people were injured in falls from height. A significant number of theses individuals now require ongoing support, from rehabilitation to financial and legal assistance.
Much of this vital help is provided by charities and organisations such as No Falls Foundation, who are working to fill the gaps and support those affected by these life-changing events.
Suggested by No Falls Foundation, powerful ways you can raise awareness this week is to:
- Hosting a toolbox talk/workshop
- Holding a safety demonstration
- Discuss how to prevent falls and re-assess your training needs
- Play a video or discuss a case study
