How to use

Step 1: Select the correct mat length for the access route. The 1m x 5m mat suits short crossing points and spot access applications. The 1m x 10m mat suits compound walkways and medium-length access routes. The 1m x 25m mat suits extended pedestrian diversions and programme-length site access paths.

Step 2: Position the rolled mat at the start of the installation area. Two people are recommended for the 1m x 25m roll at 34kg. The 1m x 5m roll at 8kg can be carried and deployed by a single operative.

Step 3: Unroll the mat along the intended access route. The mat will conform to the ground surface beneath it, including rebar, gravel, and uneven ground, without requiring surface preparation.

Step 4: Anchor the mat using the galvanised steel anchors supplied. Drive anchors through the mat eyelets into the ground at the edges and at regular intervals along the length. For hard standing, concrete, or wooden surfaces, use the optional concrete and wood anchoring kit. For underwater installation, use the optional underwater anchoring kit.

Step 5: Check that the mat edges are flat and secure with no lifted sections that could present a trip hazard at the mat perimeter. The reinforced and coated edges are designed to resist lifting and peeling under traffic.

Step 6: At the end of the deployment period, remove anchors, re-roll the mat from one end using the carrying straps supplied, and secure with the storage straps for transport and storage. Clean before storage using a broom, leaf blower, or high-pressure water jet.

Common mistakes

Selecting the wrong length for the access route: A mat that falls short of the intended route leaves an unprotected section that operatives will walk on regardless. Measure the full route length before ordering and select the next size up if the route length falls between available sizes.

Failing to anchor at the edges: An unanchored mat edge lifts under foot traffic and creates a trip hazard at exactly the point where the operative steps onto or off the mat. Always anchor the full perimeter including both ends and both long edges at regular intervals.

Using the mat under heavy plant or HGV traffic: The Mobi-Mat is rated for pedestrian and light vehicle traffic. Heavy plant, tracked machinery, and HGV axle loads will damage the mat and may cause it to fail. Use appropriate ground protection panels rated for heavy vehicle loads in plant routes.

Leaving the mat unanchored on sloped surfaces: On any gradient, an unanchored mat will migrate downhill under repeated foot traffic. On slopes, increase anchor density and use turning angle accessories where the mat changes direction.

Storing the mat wet or with debris trapped in the surface: Although the mat is UV and weather resistant, storing it rolled whilst wet with trapped mud or sand accelerates surface deterioration and makes the mat difficult to unroll at the next deployment. Always clean before rolling and storing.

Safety

The Mobi-Mat is a pedestrian access and ground protection product. It provides a non-slip walking surface certified to EN 16165 and is compliant with wheelchair access standards. It does not provide edge protection, fall arrest, or structural support. On elevated structures including rebar decks and bridge works, the mat defines the safe walking route but does not prevent falls beyond the mat edge. Edge protection must be provided separately in compliance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005. The mat must be anchored correctly before opening to pedestrian traffic. Inspect the mat and its anchors at the start of each working day and after any event that may have displaced the mat, including heavy rain, wind, or adjacent plant operations.

Maintenance

Clean using a broom, leaf blower, or high-pressure water jet to remove mud, sand, and site debris. The permeable construction allows water and fine particles to drain through the mat surface during use. Thanks to the corrosion resistance of the galvanised steel anchors, aluminium rivets, and stainless steel eyelets, the mat and its fixings require minimal maintenance during deployment. Inspect anchor points weekly on long-duration installations and replace any anchor showing signs of displacement or damage. Re-roll and store in dry conditions when not in use.
