The armourU Half Dome is a 32dB SNR ear defender designed for UK professionals working in high-noise industrial environments where both protection and wearing comfort directly determine compliance. Standard high-attenuation defenders achieve their noise reduction through firm clamping pressure and dense PVC cushions, however this creates the heat build-up and discomfort that causes operatives to remove them during long shifts. The Half Dome addresses this with memory foam ear cushions that conform individually to each wearer's ear shape, and a memory foam padded headband that distributes clamping force across a wider surface area.

At 32dB SNR (H=36dB, M=29dB, L=22dB), the Half Dome delivers substantial attenuation suitable for heavy machinery operation, power tool use, airport ground operations and high-decibel construction tasks. The adjustable cups allow rapid fitting across different head sizes, making it practical for multi-operative sites. Robust construction ensures the defender withstands daily site handling and storage without compromising the seal quality that determines attenuation performance.

armourU is a CMT Group own-brand, developed and certified through its UK subsidiary Brittmade Limited. Dual UKCA CAT III and CE CAT III certified under separate BSI Type-Examination Certificates, conforming to EN 352-1:2002, AS/NZS and ANSI standards.

Based on EN 352-1:2002 and SNR 32dB rating. Actual noise exposure reduction depends on correct fit and seal. End users must conduct their own noise risk assessment under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Usage Guide:

Before Use

Inspect the ear cushions and headband for cracks, tears or deformation before each use. Damaged cushions compromise the acoustic seal and reduce attenuation significantly; replace if damaged. Adjust the cups to achieve a firm but comfortable seal against both ears before entering the noisy environment. Confirm the SNR 32dB rating is appropriate for the noise level of the task. Under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, hearing protection must reduce noise exposure to below 85dB at the ear. For environments exceeding 110dB, a higher SNR or combined protection may be required. Consult your site noise risk assessment.

During Use

Maintain the acoustic seal throughout the task. Do not lift one cup to communicate, as this breaks the attenuation and creates a sudden pressure differential. The memory foam cushions maintain their seal during normal head movement. If the headband or cushions show any deformation during use that affects the seal, leave the noisy environment before adjusting.

After Use

Clean ear cushions with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners as these degrade the memory foam and outer cushion material. Store in the supplied recycled polyester bag away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Store above 5°C and below 40°C. Inspect regularly for cushion degradation, headband fatigue or cup adjustment mechanism wear. Replace the entire product if any component affects the acoustic seal.

What does 32dB SNR mean and is it enough for my site?

SNR (Single Number Rating) is the standardised measure of how much noise an ear defender reduces at the ear. A 32dB SNR means that in a 100dB noise environment, the effective exposure at the ear is approximately 68dB, below the 85dB legal action level under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. The H, M and L values (36, 29 and 22dB) show performance at high, mid and low frequencies respectively, allowing safety officers to match the defender to the dominant noise type on site. For most UK construction, manufacturing and plant environments, 32dB SNR provides appropriate attenuation. For sustained environments above 110dB, a higher SNR or combined ear plug and muff approach should be evaluated.

Why does memory foam make a practical difference for shift-long wear?

Standard ear defender cushions use PVC or rubber seals that apply constant uniform pressure and trap heat against the ear. Over a four to eight hour shift this causes discomfort, sweating and pressure headaches, which are the primary reasons operatives remove defenders before the task is complete. Memory foam responds to body heat and individual ear shape, distributing pressure more evenly and reducing the heat seal effect. The result is a defender that remains comfortable for significantly longer, which directly improves compliance on sites where hearing protection is mandatory.

What is CAT III PPE and why does it matter for hearing protection?

PPE is divided into three categories under UK Regulation 2016/425. CAT III covers risks that can cause serious or irreversible harm, including noise-induced hearing loss. Hearing damage is permanent and cumulative, so hearing protection must be CAT III certified, meaning it has undergone independent third-party Type-Examination by an Approved or Notified Body. The Half Dome carries separate UKCA and CE CAT III certifications issued by BSI, one of the most recognised certification bodies in the UK and EU. For procurement teams audited against CHAS, ISO 45001 or CDM requirements, CAT III certification with BSI documentation satisfies the highest level of compliance scrutiny.

Is this defender compatible with other PPE such as hard hats and safety glasses?

The adjustable cup mechanism accommodates most head sizes and standard hard hat suspension systems, although fit should always be verified on site as hard hat rims and suspension designs vary. Safety spectacle arms can affect the acoustic seal of ear defenders if the arm passes through the cushion seal area, as a reduced seal degrades attenuation performance. Where hearing protection must be worn simultaneously with safety eyewear, a pod-mounted defender attached to a hard hat may provide a more reliable seal. Always verify the combined PPE seal in your specific risk assessment.

What standards does the Half Dome conform to and where is the DoC available?

The Half Dome conforms to EN 352-1:2002 under both UKCA and CE certification, with additional compliance to AS/NZS and ANSI standards. The UKCA Declaration of Conformity was issued by Brittmade Limited on 21 June 2022, examined by BSI Assurance UK Ltd (AB No. 0086, certificate 770780). The EU Declaration of Conformity was issued on 26 July 2024, examined by BSI Group The Netherlands B.V. (NB No. 2797, certificate 770775). Copies are available from CMT Group on request for audit and procurement documentation purposes.

What is CMT ThinkGreen and does this product qualify?

CMT ThinkGreen is CMT Group's sustainability programme supporting construction and industrial operations in reducing their procurement environmental footprint. The Half Dome qualifies through its recycled polyester storage bag. For procurement teams with ISO 14001, net-zero supply chain commitments or ESG reporting requirements, specifying ThinkGreen-aligned products provides measurable, documentable contributions to sustainability targets without compromising certified safety performance. CMT Group is on track to meet its Net-Zero 50 objectives and continues to expand the ThinkGreen product range across all PPE categories.

Why buy ear defenders from CMT Group?

Hearing loss is irreversible and noise-induced damage accumulates silently over years, meaning the ear defender on an operative's head today directly determines their health outcome a decade from now. armourU is a CMT Group own-brand, developed and certified through its subsidiary Brittmade Limited. This means CMT Group controls the specification, certification documentation and quality of every Half Dome on the platform directly, with no third-party supply chain between the buyer and the manufacturer. DoCs, Type-Examination Certificates and technical data sheets are available on request without delay.

CMT Group holds BSIF Registered Safety Supplier status, meaning every hearing protection product on the platform has been independently verified against genuine certified safety standards. Founded in 2010 and now the UK's largest independent site equipment supplier, CMT Group serves over 11,000 customers across construction and industry. The EDGE procurement portal gives H&S and procurement teams joint visibility over what hearing protection is being ordered, by whom and against which site budget, closing the gap between what is specified and what actually reaches the operative.
