World Day for Safety and Health at Work has been observed internationally on the 28th April for 22 years. The annual recognition plays a crucial role in raising awareness and driving change in the workforce to create a safer future for all employees. According to ILO statistics, over 2.3 million workers die annually from work-related accidents and diseases. Of these, 51 fatalities occured in the construction sector during the 2023 - 2024 period, making an increase from 47 the previous year.
Outside of fatalities, an estimated 78,000 workers in construction industry suffered from work-related ill health. Among these:
- 52% from musculoskeletal disorders - Including back pain and joint problems.
- 18% from stress depression or anxiety - an estimate of 14,000 workers suffering from work related ill mental health.
- 30% from other conditions such as respiratory issues, skin diseases or hearing loss.

These statistics underscore the critical need for ongoing efforts to improve safety and health in the construction industry. While significatn progress has been made, the statistics still call for continued focus on prevention and innovative solutions. As we observe World Day for Safety and Health at Work, let it serve as a reminder that we share a responsibility to protect all workers.
Where it All Began
Since 2003, nations around the world have recognised World Day Safety & Health at Work. But lets have a look back at where it all began, and why health and safety remains essential in our day-to-day careers. In 1970, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed in the United States, marking a significant step in addressing global safety concerns. This movement assisted the advocation from international worker unions and labour organisations to push for better health and safety regulations.
This momentum soon led on to the observation of April 28th as Workers' memorial day, to honor those who lost their lives due to unsafe working conditions, established by the International Trade Union Confederation. Seven years later, the International Labour Organisation officially recognised April 28th, formally declaring it as the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, dedicated to promoting the prevention of workplace injury and illness.
Revolutionising Health & Safety: The role of AI and Digitalisation at Work
Each year, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) selects a theme focusing on specific safety challenges in order to inspire governments, organisations and businesses worldwide to hold events, training sessions and awareness campaigns. This year the selected theme is 'The role of AI and digitalisation at work', addressing the transformative impact of digital technologies and AI on workplace safety and health and give attention to the opportunities and challenges they evoke.
AI and Digitalisation is a fast growing feature of the construction sector, the demand for smart PPE and advanced equipment is growing as a result. These technological advancements are essential for improving safety and efficiency on construction sites. Some key innovations include:
- Predictive analytics - identifying high risk areas to help prevent injuries
A groundbreaking product that uses this is the Dustlight®. This lightweight device recognises invisible dust in the air, specifically targeting hazardous substances like silica dust, alerting the user and prompting the use of respiratory equipment. Available for next day delivery. - Smart Equipment & Automation - Such as self driving construction vehicles and AI-powered machinery.
- Wearable technology - Innovations like smart helmets and vests equipped with sensors, monitering, detecting and tracking the environment and worker to ensure real-time protection.
Another key innovation we proudly stock is the JSP® Powercap Infinity Powered Air. The powercap enhances worker safety using technology-driven features. - Drones and Robotics - Revolutionalising site inspections and aerial surveillance.
- 3D virtual Simulations - Enhancing the training experience for all employees, bringing workplace hazards to life and displaying life-like dangers.
