NLG Large D Ring Tool Tether

Large D Ring tether attachment for creating a 3kg rated tether point on heavier hand tools without captive holes, as part of the NLG Instant Tether System. The wider, longer webbing body wraps around scaffold spanners, hammers, wrenches, and other hand tools between 1kg and 3kg, and NLG Tether Tape secures the D Ring in position on the tool body. For tools under 1kg, use the NLG Small D Ring Tool Tether (NLG101361). For tools over 3kg, use the NLG Tether Choke range. Tether Tape is sold separately.

How the Wider Webbing Body Distributes Load on Heavier Hand Tools

A narrow webbing strap concentrates load onto a small area of the tool surface when the tether point is loaded. On heavier tools where greater force is involved in a drop arrest, this concentration can cause the Tether Tape wrapping to shift under load. The Large D Ring's 25mm wide webbing distributes that load across a broader surface area of the tool body, reducing the chance of movement at the tether point when the rated load is reached. The extra deep catch and wider webbing work together to keep the attachment seated correctly throughout the working period.

Key Features

Welded D Ring: High-strength welded steel D ring rated to 3kg dynamic load. The welded construction removes the mechanical weakness of split-ring alternatives at the lanyard connection point.

25mm wide webbing body: Wider than the Small D Ring's 12mm strap, the larger webbing footprint distributes load more evenly across the tool surface when wrapped with Tether Tape. Correctly sized for scaffold spanners, hammers, and larger tool handles.

Extra deep catch design: The deeper webbing loop geometry gives Tether Tape more material to grip against during wrapping. Creates a more secure bond at the attachment point on heavier tools where load demands are greater.

Contrast stitching: Black contrast stitching on green webbing makes damage visible at a glance during pre-use inspection without close handling.

Part of the NLG Instant Tether System: Pair with NLG Tether Tape (NLG101355) to create a certified tether point on any hand tool between 1kg and 3kg. For tools under 1kg, use the Small D Ring (NLG101361). Tether Tape is sold separately and is not included.

NLG ID serialised: Scannable orange tag for certificates, Declarations of Conformity, and installation videos. Supports per-unit inspection records.

Who Is This For

The Large D Ring Tool Tether is used by workers who carry heavier hand tools at height, scaffold spanners, hammers, wrenches, and similar tools in the 1kg to 3kg range, that have no captive hole or shaped section for a ring attachment. A scaffolder carrying a podger spanner, a steel fixer with an adjustable wrench, or a construction operative with a lump hammer all need a certified tether point that is rated to the weight of the tool they are using. The Large D Ring, wrapped in position with Tether Tape, creates that point without modification to the tool and without permanent attachment to its surface.

Typical Applications

  • Creating a tether point on scaffold spanners and podger spanners used by scaffolders on tube and fitting systems at height.

  • Tethering claw hammers and lump hammers used in elevated brickwork, formwork, and structural assembly.

  • Retrofitting a tether point on adjustable spanners and wrenches used for bolted connections on elevated steelwork and structures.

  • Tethering spirit levels and larger flat-bodied tools used in elevated installation and setting-out work.

  • Preparing sets of heavier hand tools at ground level before ascending, so all tools arrive at height ready for immediate lanyard connection.

How to Use

Step 1: Confirm the tool weighs between 1kg and 3kg. For tools under 1kg, use the NLG Small D Ring Tool Tether (NLG101361). For tools over 3kg, use the NLG Tether Choke range.

Step 2: Cut a length of NLG Tether Tape long enough to wrap around the tool at least six to eight times. Remove the plastic backing strip from the cut length.

Step 3: Check the tool surface is clean. Position the Large D Ring against the tool body with the NLG label facing up and the webbing catch exposed.

Step 4: Wrap the Tether Tape firmly around the D Ring catch and the tool body, stretching the tape throughout application. When the tape is stretched correctly, the edges distort and become wavy. Insufficient stretch reduces bond strength.

Step 5: Test the tether point before use by pulling firmly down on the D Ring catch. The D Ring must not move or slip.

Step 6: Connect an approved 3kg rated tool lanyard to the D Ring and attach to a rated anchor point before putting the tool into use at height.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Large D Ring on a tool over 3kg. The Tether Choke range is the correct solution for tools above this weight.

  • Using the Small D Ring (NLG101361) on a heavier tool because it is the only one in the kit. The Small D Ring is rated to 1kg only. Using it on a heavier tool exceeds its rating.

  • Wrapping Tether Tape without sufficient stretch. On heavier tools where the forces involved are greater, undertensioned tape is more likely to shift under load. Stretch the tape firmly throughout application until the edges become wavy.

  • Covering the NLG label during wrapping. Leave the label exposed and facing up so it can be read and inspected without removing the tape.

Safety

The Large D Ring Tool Tether is rated to 3kg maximum load. Do not use on tools weighing more than 3kg. This product must be used with NLG Tether Tape, the D Ring alone provides no attachment to the tool. The completed tether point must be connected to a rated lanyard and an approved anchor point before the tool is used at height. After any drop event, quarantine the D Ring and inspect before returning to service. If the Tether Tape has been displaced or damaged in a drop, remove it and replace with a fresh length. Employers have a duty under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 to take suitable steps to prevent tools falling from height.

Maintenance

Inspect the welded D Ring for distortion, cracks, sharp edges, and corrosion before each use. Inspect the webbing for cuts, abrasion, fraying, and soiling. Check the contrast stitching for wear or cuts. Confirm the NLG ID label is legible. Check the Tether Tape wrapping for any loosening or slippage on the tool body, the tape has shifted, remove it and replace with a fresh length. On removal, cut the tape cleanly away from the tool and retain the D Ring for use on another tool with fresh Tether Tape. Record formal inspections by serial number using the NLG Inspection Checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What tools does the Large D Ring Tool Tether suit?
A: It suits any hand tool between 1kg and 3kg that has no captive hole or shaped section for a ring attachment. Typical tools include scaffold spanners, podger spanners, claw hammers, lump hammers, adjustable wrenches, larger pliers, and spirit levels. For tools under 1kg, use the NLG Small D Ring Tool Tether (NLG101361). For tools over 3kg, use the NLG Tether Choke range.

Q: What is the difference between the Small and Large D Ring Tool Tether?
A: The Small D Ring (NLG101361) is rated to 1kg and has a 60mm x 12mm webbing body, suited to light hand tools including pliers, snips, and chisels. The Large D Ring (NLG101362) is rated to 3kg and has a wider, longer 100mm x 25mm webbing body, suited to heavier tools including scaffold spanners, hammers, and wrenches. Both use the same Tether Tape application method. Select based on the weight of the tool being tethered.

Q: Does the Large D Ring come with Tether Tape?
A: No. NLG Tether Tape (NLG101355) is sold separately and is required to attach the Large D Ring to the tool. The D Ring provides the lanyard connection point; the Tether Tape wraps around the D Ring and the tool body to hold it in position. Both products need to be ordered together to create a complete tether point.

Q: Why is the Large D Ring wider than the Small?
A: The wider 25mm webbing body distributes load across a broader area of the tool surface when wrapped with Tether Tape. On heavier tools where greater forces are involved in normal use and drop arrest, a wider footprint creates a more stable attachment than a narrow strap would provide at the same load rating.

Q: What do the safety standards mean?
A: The Large D Ring Tool Tether is certified to ANSI/ISEA 121-2023, the current international standard for dropped object prevention equipment, and NS 9611:2022+AC, the standard for personal tool attachment systems at height. Dynamic load testing at 2:1 safety factor means the D Ring is tested at 6kg against its 3kg rating. CE and UKCA marking confirms UK and European safety compliance. Independent load test certificates and Declarations of Conformity are available from NLG on request.

Q: What is this NOT suitable for?
A: It is not suitable for tools weighing more than 3kg, use the NLG Tether Choke range for heavier tools. It cannot be used without NLG Tether Tape. The lanyard must connect to the welded D Ring only, not to the webbing or Tether Tape wrapping. It must not be used as a standalone lanyard, anchor point, or fall protection component.

Q: Can I reuse the Large D Ring after removing it from a tool?
A: Yes. When the tether point is no longer needed, cut the Tether Tape cleanly away and inspect the D Ring for damage before reusing it. Apply fresh Tether Tape to attach it to the next tool. The D Ring is reusable; the Tether Tape is a single-use consumable.
